How much is a taxi from Barcelona Airport?

Barcelona is roughly 15 km across, and the airport sits outside the city to the south-west. That means the distance from the terminal to your hotel varies enormously depending on which hotel it is. Sants is about 11 km from the terminals. The Eixample is around 15. Poblenou and the Fòrum are closer to 20.

A flat "airport transfer" price has to sit somewhere in the middle of that range, which means the person going to Sants is overpaying and the person going to Poblenou is being subsidised by them. Aggregator sites like flat prices because they are easy to advertise, not because they are fair.

The honest way to price the trip is the way the meter does it: by the distance and time actually travelled, on the tariff the city publishes.

Barcelona taxi fares are set by the Àrea Metropolitana de Barcelona, and every licensed taxi in the city runs on the same numbers. There is a starting charge when the meter begins, a rate per kilometre while you are moving, and a rate per hour while you are stopped in traffic.

There are two tariff bands. T-1 applies Monday to Friday between 08:00 and 20:00 on working days. T-2 applies at night, at weekends and on public holidays, and its per-kilometre rate is higher. This is why the same journey genuinely costs more at eleven at night than at two in the afternoon — it is not the driver improvising.

On top of that sits an official airport supplement, which applies whenever a trip starts or ends at the terminals. It is a fixed amount, it is set by the same authority, and it appears on the meter automatically. There is also an official minimum fare for journeys starting at the airport, so a very short hop to a nearby hotel will not come out at four euros.

The supplements a Barcelona taxi may charge are published and finite: the airport, the cruise terminals, Sants station on departure, the Fira Gran Via venue, and a large-vehicle charge when a vehicle with more than five seats carries four or more passengers. There is also a cap on how much supplement can be added to any single trip.

Anything outside that list is not an official supplement. A charge for luggage, for paying by card, for booking ahead, or for it being a Sunday is not something the tariff provides for — though a driver may of course quote you a higher fixed price in advance, which is a different thing and must be agreed before you set off.

If you take the meter, ask for the receipt at the end. It shows the fare and the supplements separately, which makes it easy to check.

A fixed price agreed in advance moves the traffic risk from you to the driver. If the Ronda backs up, that is their problem. It is the right choice when you are arriving at rush hour, when you have a connection to make, or when you simply want to know the number before you get in.

The meter can work out slightly cheaper on a quiet run — late at night, or mid-afternoon in August when the city is empty. The trade is certainty for a small saving.

Either way, the thing to insist on is knowing which one you are on before the car moves. A pre-booked fixed price should be confirmed in writing.
