Pick-up and the border
Almost every Andorra transfer starts at BCN Airport, and I meet you inside arrivals with a sign. Ski and board bags are fine — tell me how many when you book so I bring the right car.
The Spanish–Andorran border at La Farga de Moles is an ordinary customs post. It is usually a slow roll-through, but on Sunday evenings in winter, when day-trippers head home, it can take twenty minutes. It costs nothing extra either way.
Andorra is outside the EU customs union, so there are limits on what you can bring back — mostly relevant on the return trip with tobacco and alcohol. I will point out the limits if you ask, but what you carry is your business.
Over the mountains
It is around 200 km and about two hours forty-five minutes, on the C-16 through the Túnel del Cadí and then up the valley. The last hour is genuine mountain road and the scenery is the best part of the trip.
In winter I carry chains and run winter tyres, and I check the state of the passes before setting off. If the road is closed we will know before you land, not halfway up.
It is a long enough drive that a break is welcome. There is a good stop at Bellver de Cerdanya, roughly two thirds of the way, and stopping costs nothing.
Getting there another way
A taxi is not always the right answer. Here is the honest comparison for this trip.
| Option | Time | Cost | Best when |
|---|---|---|---|
| Direct coach (Andbus / Direct Bus) | 3 h 15 to 3 h 45 | €30–€40 per person | A solo traveller whose flight matches a departure, travelling with one bag. |
| Train to Puigcerdà plus bus | 5 h or more with changes | €25–€35 per person | Not practical with ski luggage or on a winter timetable. |
| Taxi | 2 h 45 door to door | Fixed, tolls included | Groups of three or more, ski luggage, late arrivals, or a chalet the coach does not reach. |
Questions about this trip
Do you use winter tyres and carry chains?
Yes, in season, and I check the state of the passes before we leave. If a road is closed you will hear from me before you get on the plane.
Can you take skis and snowboards?
Yes. Tell me how many bags and boards when you book so I bring a car with the space. Larger groups get the minivan.
Do you go to the ski resorts as well as the capital?
Yes — Soldeu, El Tarter, Canillo, Encamp, Pas de la Casa and Arinsal, along with Andorra la Vella and Escaldes. Give me the hotel and the price is worked out to it.
Is there anything to pay at the border?
No. The crossing is free and the tolls are already in the price. Customs limits on goods are a matter between you and the officers.
