Seats are fitted before I set off, so there is no roadside wrestling with belts while you stand on a kerb with a tired child.

Spanish law requires an approved restraint for children under 135 cm in private cars. Licensed taxis have a limited exemption in urban traffic, but an exemption is not the same as a good idea on a motorway run to Sitges or Salou.

Because seats occupy a seat belt position, three child seats plus adults will not fit a saloon. Set the passenger count in the booking form and the minivan is selected automatically.

A rear-facing infant carrier suits babies up to around 13 kg. A forward-facing child seat with a harness covers roughly one to four years. A booster cushion raises older children so the adult belt crosses the shoulder rather than the neck, and stays useful until about 135 cm.

Tell me ages rather than seat names and I will bring the right one — parents are rarely carrying a tape measure at the airport. If you are travelling with a pushchair as well, mention it: a folded buggy takes roughly one large suitcase of boot space.
